3 Types of Air Conditioning (AC) System

Air conditioning has many benefits. As well as controlling the climate of your home or workspace, AC can also improve air quality and reduce humidity at the same time.

But if you’re shopping for an AC for the first time, it can be confusing differentiating between the types of air conditioning system. Read on as we clear things up.

Air conditioning types

First things first, it’s worth knowing that different types of air conditioning system will be suitable for different settings. You wouldn’t have the same kind of AC in a commercial building as a domestic space, for example.

Before deciding on one, it’s best to factor in the kind of space that the AC will be designed to cool, as well as the budget, energy consumption, and space requirements that you may have.

Broadly speaking, there are three main types of AC…

1.    Split systems

These consist of two units – an inner and outer component. The outer one is louder and bulkier, and is therefore housed outside of buildings, but is connected to an inner component.

The inner component will usually be wall mounted, with either split or multi-head systems. They can be a little bulky, which needs to be taken into account when designing a space. They’ll also usually have a higher upfront cost. But they do give you greater climate control via remote, and are more efficient than other air conditioning types.

2.    Monoblock ACs

There are different types of air conditioning system that fit under this category, from portable and floor mounted ACs through to those mounted on either a wall or window.

These are all classified as monoblock air conditioners as they consist of one unit designed to be located inside a building, but with an outdoor pipe that disperses heated (or cooled, depending on the temperature) air.

There are various types of monoblock AC, all of which have different pros and cons:

  • Window air conditioners, for example, are great budget options, but they can be noisy.
  • Wall air conditioners are also suitable in instances where planning refuses permission to install an outdoor unit, but they are bulky.
  • Portable or mobile ACs are relatively moveable, but they can also be noisy and limited in capacity.

Choosing between these types of air conditioning system will depend on your needs and circumstances.

3.    Multi split systems

Much like split systems, these are the types of AC with an outdoor element, but more than one indoor component – typically between two and four. With multi split systems, there can be different types of indoor units all run from the same outdoor condenser. So, for example, you could have a wall mount in one room and a floor unit in another.

This kind of AC tends to be more powerful, and is better suited to office environments, or for spaces where customers prefer ACs in multiple rooms. They usually have a high upfront cost for installation, but are generally more efficient types of AC than window or portable units.
