Air source heat pump installation is becoming more and more popular across the UK. With good reason too. It helps you reduce your dependence on electric heaters and gas boilers to lower your energy bills and cut your carbon footprint over time.
That said, it’s still a relatively new concept for most people. To clear things up, this post will discuss a few things you should know about installation and the process involved for air source heat pumps.
Where does an air source heat pump go?
The first question on most customers’ minds is whereabouts the heat pump will be situated. In short, air source heat pumps are installed outside your property so they can extract moisture from the external air.
They’re generally placed at the back or side of the building to minimise the visual impact. This is also an important factor when it comes to planning permission. A heat pump is classed as a permitted development, as long as it:
- Is your first air source heat pump.
- Is positioned at least a metre from your property’s boundaries.
- Has a volume of 0.6 cubic metres or less.
- Will only be used for heating.
- Will be installed on a flat surface (ground or flat roof).
- Is installed at least a metre from the edge of a flat roof (if applicable).
- Is not being installed on a listed property or within a conservation area.
If your air source heat pump installation doesn’t adhere to any of these requirements, it isn’t necessarily prohibited. However, you will need to apply for planning permission before having it installed.
How long does installation take?
Unlike ground source heat pumps, which get heat from underground, air source heat pump installation doesn’t require any digging. As a result, the process is relatively simple, and can usually be completed in 2-3 days. After that, you can start using your air source heat pump for heating or hot water right away.
It’s worth noting that engineers will need access to the heating system and mains power inside your property to install your heat pump. The heat pump needs to be attached to heating pipes and wired into your home’s power supply in order to operate. Because of this, it’s usually best if someone is around. Alternatively, you can leave a spare key as long as you’re using a trusted company.
