How Much Does an Air Source Heat Pump Cost?

If you’re looking to reduce your carbon footprint and lower your energy bills, then an air source heat pump is a great alternative to your old boiler – but you might be wondering ‘how much does an air source heat pump cost?’

It’s important to know the cost upfront, so you can weigh up whether it’s right for you – and your budget. Read on to discover what the upgrade is likely to cost…

The two types of heat pumps

The cost of an air source heat pump will vary depending on which of the two types you choose. There are some big differences between the two…

Air to air heat pump costs

One option is an ‘air to air’ heat pump. As the name suggests, this pump takes heat from the air outside your property and transfers it into heat for your home via fan units or blowers. Air to air heat pumps cannot produce hot water, so you won’t be able to use them for radiators, showering, or underfloor heating.

When it comes to air source heat pump costs, air to air is the cheaper option. For the average UK household, prices can range between £1,600 to just over £3,000. However, they are not eligible for the Renewable Heat Incentive scheme.

Air to water heat pump costs

The most popular type of heat pump is the ‘air to water’ type. This heat pump draws in heat from outside, which is then used to heat up water for circulation around your home.

Air to water heat pumps can be used to heat your radiators and underfloor heating, as well as water from your taps and shower. According to the Energy Saving Trust, the costs of these air source heat pumps range from £7,000 to £13,000. This will vary on its size, complexity, and number of features, as well as the size of your property. Though they’re more expensive, air to water heat pumps qualify for a government scheme that covers part of their costs.

Boiler Upgrade Scheme

As the air to water heat pump covers all of your home’s heating and hot water, it qualifies for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. Available from Spring 2022, this grant covers part of the costs for an upgrade from a standard gas boiler to an energy efficient alternative. The grant covers £5,000 of the costs for an air source heat pump, reducing air to water pumps to roughly the same price as an air to air heat pump.

To qualify, your household will need to live in either England or Wales. You’ll also need to show you’ve made reasonable energy efficiency improvements and use an MCS-certified installer.
