How to Get a Government Grant to Upgrade Your Boiler

Upgrading your boiler to a more energy-efficient model can have a big impact on your carbon footprint and your wallet! However, the cost of swapping a standard boiler to something more efficient like an air source heat pump can put many people off.

Thankfully, to encourage the adoption of greener technology, there are government grants available that can help you. In this post, we’re going to outline how you can apply for one, and some other things to keep in mind when upgrading your boiler.

What is a government grant to upgrade boiler?

In the UK, there is a specific government grant you can use to get financial assistance to upgrade your boiler. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is available for eligible homeowners and tenants to replace old and inefficient boilers with newer models – namely systems with a heat pump or biomass boiler. This has been created to try and get rid of old fossil fuel heating systems including gas, electric and oil.

The scheme is available to many people throughout England and Wales, and there are also options for people living in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme allows you to get either £5,000 towards an air source heat pump, £6,000 towards a ground source heat pump or £5,000 towards a biomass boiler. Each of these is a more modern, efficient and eco-friendly alternative to traditional heating systems.

Check your eligibility

Before you get your hopes up about being accepted for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, you should first check your eligibility. There are a few key criteria that you must meet before you will be accepted into the Scheme. These include:

  1. You own the property you’re applying for.
  2. You want to install your new heating system after April 1st 2022.
  3. You must be replacing an old fossil fuel heating system like oil, electric or gas.

You’ll also need to make sure that your property is eligible in general. This means that it must have a valid energy performance certificate (also called an EPC), that has no outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation.

There are also specific eligibility criteria for biomass boilers, including your property being off the gas grid, your property being in a location classified as rural, and that your boiler has an emissions certificate signifying that its polluting emissions are kept to a minimum.

What properties can you not get a grant for?

There are a few properties that you won’t be able to get a grant for. These include properties classified as “new build,” any kind of social housing, and a property that has already been given funding or government support for a heat pump or biomass boiler. Double-check that your property does not fall under any of these before you go consider applying.
