Sometimes it can feel like appliances always break when you need them the most. There’s nothing worse than broken AC on a scorching day, and you’ll want to get it fixed as soon as possible. If you’re wondering “why is my aircon not working,” this post will discuss some possible causes.
Why is my aircon not cold – basic troubleshooting
Here are a few of the most common air conditioning issues and how you can fix them.
Problems with the fuse
If your aircon won’t turn on, there’s a chance that this is down to issues with the fuse. Double check that your fuse is positioned correctly and that nothing has been tripped.
Clogged filters
A clogged filter can prevent the unit from cooling the room or even turning on at all. It can also cause ice to form inside the unit. Make sure you regularly change your filters to prevent this happening.
Thermostat set too high
If your thermostat has a goal temperature that’s higher than the current room temperature, it won’t tell the AC to start cooling. Ensure that your thermostat is set low enough that your aircon needs to be running.
Another possibility is that your thermostat isn’t switched on, so double check that you haven’t accidentally left it turned off.
Blocked air vents
Why is my aircon not cold? It could simply be a blockage. If either of the air vents are blocked, there is no way for air to circulate. Ensure that there’s nothing in the way of either the indoor or outdoor vents.
Why is my aircon not working – more serious issues
If none of the above fixes help, there’s a chance that your air conditioning system might have bigger problems.
Burnt out fan motor
If the motors used to spin the fans are burnt out, the fans won’t work and air won’t move around. This can look like slow fans, or fans that don’t spin as often as they should. If this happens, you’ll want to call in a technician to fix it for you.
You can prevent this happening again by ensuring that you regularly change filters, to minimise the amount of dust that can get in and damage the fans.
Loose parts
If your unit is rattling, something is definitely wrong. Buzzing may indicate that there is an electrical issue. If either of these things are happening, turn off your AC and bring in an expert.
Refrigerant leak
If the fluid that circulates inside the unit isn’t contained properly, this prevents the system from cooling your room. This could result in the unit continuously running, as the room won’t reach the temperature set by the thermostat.
A chemical leak could potentially be dangerous, so the best course of action is to turn the unit off and call in an engineer.
